UVA COMM 2010: Introduction to Financial Accounting

COMM 2010 is the first of McIntire's pre-commerce accounting pair: the accounting cycle, financial statements, and the core asset, liability, and equity topics. Hundreds of second-years take it each fall, largely online, with performance feeding directly into McIntire admission stakes.

Fennie is independent and not affiliated with University of Virginia. This is an unofficial study guide.

What makes it hard

The format is the famous difficulty: largely self-paced online delivery means the course is effectively self-taught from readings and videos, and discipline does the work lectures normally would. The material itself is cumulative mechanics (debits and credits compound into statements), and the McIntire-admission stakes put real pressure on every exam point.

What you'll cover

  • The accounting cycle
  • Journal entries, debits, and credits
  • Financial statements and their links
  • Revenue recognition and receivables
  • Inventory and cost flow methods
  • Long-lived assets and depreciation

The COMM 2010 study guide

How to study for UVA COMM 2010, step by step.

  1. 1

Replace the missing lecture with a fixed schedule

COMM 2010's online format means nobody paces you; discipline does what lectures normally would. Block recurring weekly sessions from day one and treat them as immovable.

  2. 2

    Drill journal entries until mechanical

Debits and credits are the grammar of everything afterward. Practice entries daily in the early weeks; hesitation at the entry level compounds into confusion at the statement level.

  3. 3

Trace every transaction to the statements

For each entry, follow its effect through the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flows. Exams test the linkages, and that tracing habit is what makes the statements one system instead of three documents.

  4. 4

Work problem sets cold, then rework misses

Accounting is learned in the doing, and the online format makes passive 'keeping up' invisible until an exam exposes it. Solve without solutions open, and redo every miss within a day or two.

  5. 5

    Never let a week slide

The material is strictly cumulative and the McIntire stakes make recovery expensive. If a topic wobbles, fix it that week; self-paced courses make falling behind silent until it's severe.

FAQ

Is COMM 2010 at UVA hard?

The material is methodical; the format is the difficulty. Largely online and self-paced, it's effectively self-taught: students with weekly discipline find it very manageable, while procrastinators meet a cumulative subject and McIntire-level stakes at the worst possible time.

Do I need COMM 2010 for McIntire?

The accounting pair (COMM 2010 and 2020) is core pre-commerce coursework, and performance in it matters for McIntire admission. Most prospective Commerce students take 2010 in fall of second year and 2020 in spring; verify the current prerequisite list as you plan.

How do I do well in COMM 2010?

Schedule it like a lecture course even though nobody makes you: fixed weekly sessions, journal-entry drills until mechanical, and every transaction traced through to the financial statements. Work problems cold and fix misses fast; the cumulative material punishes silent slippage.
