UF STA 2023: Introduction to Statistics 1

STA 2023 is UF's introductory statistics course, covering descriptive statistics, probability, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. It's required by business, health science, and many other majors, and it's one of UF's biggest courses, typically delivered through online lectures with proctored exams.

Fennie is independent and not affiliated with University of Florida. This is an unofficial study guide.

What makes it hard

Conceptually it's gentler than calculus, but the exam questions are interpretation-heavy and the multiple-choice distractors are built from common misconceptions about p-values and confidence intervals. The online format also means nobody notices you're behind until the first exam does.

What you'll cover

  • Descriptive statistics and graphs
  • Probability basics
  • Sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem
  • Confidence intervals
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Correlation and simple regression

The STA 2023 study guide

How to study for UF STA 2023, step by step.

  1. 1

Watch lectures on a fixed weekly schedule

STA 2023's online format means nobody notices you're behind until the first exam does. Treat the recorded lectures like appointments.

  2. 2

Translate every result into plain English

Compute the interval, then write what it claims and what it doesn't. The exams live on interpretation, and the distractors are built from the standard misconceptions.

  3. 3

Master the Central Limit Theorem early

Sampling distributions are the hinge of the whole course; everything in inference assumes them. Revisit the concept across multiple weeks until it genuinely clicks.

  4. 4

    Practice with mixed multiple-choice sets

The exam format rewards recognizing question types fast. Mixed practice trains that recognition in a way topic-by-topic review can't.

FAQ

Is STA 2023 hard at UF?

It's moderate. The computations are formula-driven, but exams test interpretation, and students who only memorize formulas miss those questions. Keeping pace with the online lectures weekly is the main success factor.

Is STA 2023 online at UF?

It's commonly delivered with online lectures and proctored exams, though formats vary by term. Either way, the grade comes down to a few exams, so structured weekly study matters more than attendance ever would.

What's the hardest part of STA 2023?

Inference: confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. The mechanics are easy; knowing what the result means and what it doesn't is what's tested. Practice writing conclusions in context for every problem you do.
