UF CHM 2045: General Chemistry 1

CHM 2045 is UF's first general chemistry course, covering stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding, thermochemistry, and gases. Huge cohorts of pre-health, science, and engineering students take it alongside the CHM 2045L lab, and it's one of the most consequential GPA courses for UF's large pre-med population.

Fennie is independent and not affiliated with University of Florida. This is an unofficial study guide.

What makes it hard

The exams are multiple-choice, multi-step, and timed, which is a brutal combination: one arithmetic slip in step two of a four-step stoichiometry problem yields a clean wrong answer with no partial credit. The competition is the other factor, since the course is graded against a hall full of pre-meds who treat it as their first audition.

What you'll cover

  • Stoichiometry and limiting reagents
  • Atomic structure and periodic trends
  • Chemical bonding and Lewis structures
  • Molecular geometry (VSEPR)
  • Thermochemistry
  • Gas laws

The CHM 2045 study guide

How to study for UF CHM 2045, step by step.

  1. 1

Get mole math automatic in three weeks

Stoichiometric fluency gates everything after it in CHM 2045. Daily conversions until they're reflexive is the single best early investment.

  2. 2

Memorize ions and rules before exam one

Flashcard polyatomic ions, solubility rules, and nomenclature early so exam minutes go to multi-step reasoning instead of recall.

  3. 3

    Train under the clock

Timed multiple choice with no partial credit means speed and accuracy are the whole grade. Practice problems on a timer, every time.

  4. 4

    Classify every miss

Tag each miss as a concept gap, a setup error, or an arithmetic slip. Each needs a different fix, and untagged misses get re-made on exam night.

FAQ

Is CHM 2045 a weed-out class at UF?

It functions like one, especially for pre-meds. The material is standard gen chem, but timed multiple-choice exams with no partial credit and a competitive curve mean small errors are expensive. Weekly problem volume is the difference-maker.

How do I study for CHM 2045 exams?

Work practice exams timed, and review every miss by category: concept gap, setup error, or arithmetic. Memorize polyatomic ions and solubility rules early so exam time goes to multi-step reasoning rather than recall.

Do I take CHM 2045L at the same time?

Most students take the lab concurrently since downstream courses and pre-health requirements expect both. The lab is a separate grade and a separate time commitment, so budget for the reports when planning your week.
